Recently, we reported that the first-ever unit of the second generation Mahindra Thar is under an auction and that the winning bid has already surpassed the Rs 80 lakh milestone. Well, finally, the auction has come to an end and with this, the first unit of the new generation SUV has been sold for a bid of whopping Rs 1.09 crore. To put things in perspective, this is higher than what one would pay for an Audi Q7, Mercedes GLS, or even a Jeep Grand Cherokee. The winning bid has been made by one Mr. Arun, who hails from Chennai.

The amount that Mahindra has bagged from the auction will be donated for COVID relief measures. The owner of the first 2020 Mahindra Thar will get to choose the charitable organization that he wants the amount to be given to. The list of NGOs includes Naandi Foundation, Swades Foundation, and PM Cares Fund. Also, this Mahindra Thar is no ordinary car as it features a decorative plate positioned on the dashboard that bears the serial no. 1. Also, the #1 badges will be seen in several other parts of the car. Not only this, the name of Mr. Arun, the car owner, will be shown on the badges positioned at numerous spots on the car. Mr. Arun will now get to choose from the six colour options and the multiple engine-gearbox options that the second generation Thar will be offered with.

It must be noted here that bookings for the 2020 Mahindra Thar commenced recently and prices of the new vehicle will be announced on October 2, which the 75th foundation day of Mahindra. The new model will be sold in three trim levels – AX, AX Option, and LX. Also, the new Thar has already created a lot of buzz, thereby indicating the huge success that awaits for the new model.
For the uninitiated, the new generation Mahindra Thar will go on sale with both petrol and diesel engine options – 2.0L turbo-petrol and 2.2L turbo-diesel. The 2.0-litre petrol engine, which is a 4-cylinder turbocharged unit, will output a maximum power of 150 PS and a peak torque of 320 Nm. Meanwhile, the 2.2-litre turbocharged diesel engine will also have 4-cylinder configuration but it will offer a maximum power of 130 PS and a peak torque of 300 Nm. Gearbox options for the new Thar comprise of 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque-converter automatic unit. Four-wheel-drive with a low-range transfer case and locking rear-diff will be on offer as standard across all variants.
