The Tata Altroz is a premium hatchback that went on sale in India back in January 2020. It takes on the likes of Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Hyundai Elite i20, Toyota Glanza, Honda Jazz as well as the Volkswagen Polo. While the Tata Altroz is yet to outclass popular models like the Baleno and the Elite i20, it has pretty much managed to make a name for itself in the market by offering an attractive design, spacious cabin, good ride quality, and many promising features.

So far, the Tata Altroz has been on sale with a petrol as well as a diesel engine option. The former is a 1.2-litre naturally-aspirated petrol motor that comes from the Tiago and goes on to offer a rather ordinary 83PS and 113Nm. On the other hand, the diesel engine displaces 1.5-litre and offers 90PS and 200Nm. While the diesel engine still offers adequate performance, the petrol engine can surely do with more grunt. Also, there is no automatic transmission option as both the engines are only offered with a manual transmission.

However, it looks like things are set to improve as the Tata Altroz will soon receive a turbocharged petrol engine that will come mated to a dual-clutch automatic transmission, a first for any Tata car. It must be noted that the Tata Altroz Turbo petrol has already made its public debut at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show, and now, it looks like the car is very close to making it to the car market of our country.

As per an official document that leaked recently, the Tata Altroz turbo petrol model will feature a 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine that will deliver 110 PS of maximum power at 5,500 rpm and 140 Nm of peak torque that will be available between 1,500 – 5,500 rpm. Initially, the new engine variant is likely to go on sale with a 6-speed manual gearbox, while a dual-clutch automatic transmission is expected to be launched at a later stage. As per the aforementioned leaked document, the 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine option will be on offer in as many as four trims that will include mid-range and top-spec trims, namely XT, XT (O), XZ and XZ (O). In most likelihood, the new variant will be launched around this festive season.

At the moment, the 1.2 naturally-aspirated petrol variant of the Tata Altroz is on sale in a price range of Rs 5.44 lakh to Rs 7.89 lakh, while the turbo option will start at Rs 7.99 lakh and go all the way to Rs 8.75 lakh (all prices are ex-showroom). Currently, the only other car in this segment to offer a turbo-petrol option is the VW Polo. However, the next-gen i20, which will launch in a few months from now, is very likely to offer a turbocharged petrol engine option.
